Homeowner Exterior Paint Program

Eligible Applicants
Owner-occupants of single-family residences whose income does not exceed the Santa Clara County median-income standard, adjusted for family size, may qualify. The property to be painted must be the only real estate owned by the applicant. Other asset limits may also apply. Please refer to the Eligibility Criteria for eligible income levels.

Eligible Properties
Single-family, mobilehome and duplex residences located in the City of San José may be eligible for this program. The Housing Department will inspect all properties to verify the need for exterior painting.

Grant Limits
The Department of Housing will pay 100% of the cost of painting the exterior of a single-family home, duplex or a mobilehome, up to a maximum of $5,000.

Scope of Improvements
The City of San José Paint Grant Program applies to the exterior of the dwelling and only includes previously painted surfaces. The program also includes all preparation work, including minor repairs necessary to create a suitable painting surface (such as window caulking or small areas of termite- or water-damaged wood). The painting work may include up to two colors (base and trim) of the owner's choosing (up to three colors for Victorian and other historic homes).
